Check Presented for Breast Cancer Research

“It didn’t really start as a fundraiser,” graduate student Nicolette Stanfill said near a table adorned with pink ribbons, pink-frosted chocolate cupcakes and crowned with heart-shaped pink balloons. “We just made the shirts for the staff and the second they came out everyone wanted one. So we decided to sell them.”

By the end of October, the URC Fitness Center, working together with the Physical Education Heath and Recreation (PEHR) graduate club, were able to sell 500 T-shirts, making $1,000. On Jan. 26, a check for the proceeds was presented to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.

EWU students were eager to lend their support, aside from the URC student staff who promoted the shirts by wearing them to work, some students “reached out to their personal networks and came back with orders of 30 or more shirts,” Stanfill said. “Students were huge in propelling the [fundraiser] forward.”

For those who are interested in lending more support, or maybe getting involved for the first time, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is scheduled for late April in Spokane. Those interested can find more information at www.komen.org.  Stanfill said that she has been working with the Eastern Washington Affiliate for Susan G. Komen to see if it would be possible for EWU to sponsor a team for the run.
