The 2nd Annual Weaving the Threads: An Evening of Women’s Empowerment will take place on Thursday, March 1st from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Walter & Myrtle Powers Reading Room, Hargreaves Hall. The event was a great success last year due to the generous support we received from across campus. This year we will once again gather a group of diverse EWU faculty, staff, administrators, and students, as well as potential female mentors from Spokane and Cheney, to strengthen the “inter-woven” bond among multicultural university women through an evening of joyful empowerment and networking.
We are honored to have Dr. Deborah Wilds, President and Chief Operating Officer of College Success Foundation, as keynote speaker this year. The College Success Foundation has over 10 years of proven experience inspiring underserved, low-income students to finish high school and providing the unique integrated system of support and scholarships they need to graduate college and succeed in life. Prior to 2006, Dr. Wilds was a Senior Program Officer for Education at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she led efforts for the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, Gates Cambridge Scholars, and Washington State Achievers Program. She also oversaw the early college initiative creating 250 new early college high schools. Dr. Wilds has a Ph.D. in Education Policy, Planning, and Administration from University of Maryland at College Park; an M.S. degree from Howard University; and a B.S. degree from California State University, San Diego.
The gathering will include a brief workshop on networking, provided by EWU’s own Career Services, and students will have the opportunity to practice their networking skills with a group of successful multicultural women from the Cheney and Spokane areas during an informal reception.
Please help spread the word and encourage your students to take advantage of this great opportunity. The event is free for students. Free on-site childcare will be provided by Children’s Studies Club. The event is also open to all faculty, staff , and administrators – you can choose to sign up as a mentor or a mentee. To supplement the cost of the event, EWU staff and faculty are asked to pay $10.
