2013 ‘Read to Lead’ Winners Selected

Each year, the EWU Libraries holds a “Read to Lead” competition that is open to EWU students with a junior standing. The program highlights students who have demonstrated leadership in EWU clubs, organizations or athletic teams while maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA. The students are selected by a panel of judges and are highlighted on “Read to Lead” posters throughout the EWU Libraries.

We are pleased to announce the 2013 “Read to Lead” winners: Emma Murillo, Lizbeth Ramirez Perez, and Erika Enciso-Castillo.

Emma Murillo is a secondary education major focusing in Spanish. Her academic achievements have regularly landed her on the Dean’s List. Murillo’s athletic talents on the EWU track team have earned her the title of Athlete of the Month. Additionally, in her role as a community advisor she serves as a leader that helps those within both the sports and Eastern community as a whole. She has been a part of Athletes in Action since 2011; which has put her in the position to create a supportive community among the entire student athletic body.

Lizbeth Ramirez Perez is a business administration major with a concentration in management. She also is working toward three minors – Spanish, communications and psychology. While thriving in academia, Perez also manages to hold multiple leadership positions around campus, including: Superior Court Associate Justice for ASEWU, New Student Orientation Leader, intern for EWU Admissions, Student Leader for M.E.CH.A and more.

Erika Enciso-Castillo is a secondary education major who has shown strong leadership within the Eastern community, while at the same time excelling academically. Enciso-Castillo holds many leadership positions within the community, including those within the M.E.CH.A organization. She is also an orientation coordinator for New Student Transitions and Parent programs, an ambassador for the LEAP (Latino/a Education Achievment Project) program, a volunteer for the Voices Against Violence and National TRiO Day events; all while maintaining a GPA above 3.0.

EWU Libraries started the “Eagles Who Read to Lead” in 2009 as a program to promote reading at EWU. The 2013 “Read to Lead” posters will be unveiled on May 22, 2013, at the Books2Eat Celebration.
