An Eastern Washington University summer tradition, the 26th-Annual Ron Raver Memorial Golf Classic presented by Harvest Foods will take place Wednesday, August 7 at Liberty Lake and MeadowWood Golf Courses.
The scramble format tournament begins at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. Special “team handicapping” will again be used, as each team will be assigned a handicap and will begin the tournament under par.
Cost to enter the tournament is $125, or $500 for a team of four, with net proceeds going toward athletic scholarships at Eastern Washington University. The cost includes lunch (at 11:30 a.m.), dinner, beverages, range balls, green fees, cart, a voucher for EWU football game tickets and a special gift.
For details and an entry form, go to http://WWW.GOEAGS.COM or call 509-359-2463 or 1-800-648-7697.
Tee and green sponsorships, which include signage, an entry for a team of four, and EWU football and basketball season tickets, are available for $800 each. Major sponsorships cost $2,000.
The event is named after Ron Raver, who was Eastern’s Athletic Director for 11 years, and was a force in the school’s rise from the NAIA to NCAA Division I. He was a former tennis coach, assistant basketball coach, and assistant and head baseball coach at EWU. Raver officially retired in 2000 but continued to assist the department with special events and fund-raising. In Fall 2001, he was inducted into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame, which he helped create five years earlier. Ron passed away on March 1, 2002, at the age of 62 after a battle with cancer.
The 2010 tournament returned to the renovated Liberty Lake Golf Course after a one year hiatus. Liberty Lake underwent a 19-month, $6 million renovation, and the once relatively flat terrain on which the course sits was mounded to create a more modern and refined look.
In addition, all of the old greens were leveled to make room for 18 new bent-grass putting surfaces that average nearly 7,000 square feet in area – almost 2,000 more than the ones they replaced. The new greens, along with their massiveness, also feature a devious assortment of humps, bumps and other contours. And lots of water hazards were added, along with 28 sand traps and about 30 new trees.
