Budget & Program Review Approved; Vaccine Requirement Presented to BOT

The Eastern Washington University Board of Trustees (BOT) has approved the 2021-23 Biennium Operating Budget, which totals more than $600 million over two years. Members also accepted the Academic Program Review proposal and heard a recommendation for the new vaccine requirement policy.

The Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 operating budget, which starts July 1, totals $317 million, and includes a 2.8 percent resident undergraduate tuition increase, as allowed by the Legislature. This brings the annual tuition rate for in-state students to $6,896.

Board members also approved a $90 million capital budget, highlighted by a state appropriation of $45 million to renovate the old Science building.

The Board also unanimously approved the administration’s Program Review recommendation. The reduction plan is a mission-driven effort to eliminate certain programs and majors as the university reshapes its focus to serve the needs of students and the community.

Finally, Trustees were presented with the first reading of a policy requiring students, staff and faculty to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as well as measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). The university will gather public input on the plan and anticipates an emergency version will approved later this summer.
