  • 1. Does each rung on the ladder start with a verb that describes an action that can be directly observed (seen or heard) by the instructor?

  • 2. Is each rung "single-barreled" (i.e., describes one activity; avoids "and")?

  • 3. Do all rungs on the ladder avoid using verbs (e.g., develop, improve, enhance, strengthen) or adjectives (improved, enhanced, strengthened) that imply a comparison between two points in time?

  • 4. Does each rung on the ladder specify a skill, body of knowledge or degree of mastery that one would anticipate that students would not have acquired prior to enrolling in the program?

  • 5. Is each rung on the ladder a program learning outcome-that is, does it specify some specific knowledge or skill that the student will need to demonstrate at a particular moment in time?

  • 6. Is each PLO succinct?

  • 7. Is the PLO specific to the academic discipline (rather than generic to many disciplines)?

  • 8. Is the number of rungs on the ladder a manageable number to assess-that is, about five to seven PLOs for a program?
