EWU ATHLETICS WANTS EVERYONE TO FEEL SAFE PLAYING SPORTS

EWU has joined the If You Can Play campaign, which focuses on working for diversity and inclusion in sports, including all LGBT athletes, staff and fans. The EWU version of the If You Can Play video, which debuted during the 2014 Diversity Week keynote event, features EWU student-athletes and coaches from a wide array of sports and provides a powerful message that EWU athletics strives to welcoming and inclusive, allowing anyone who can play, to play.

Started more than two years ago, the You Can Play Project is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation, race or ethnicity. You Can Play works to guarantee that athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete, judged only by what they contribute to the sport or their team’s success. You Can Play seeks to challenge the culture of locker rooms and spectator areas by focusing only on an athlete’s skills, work ethic and competitive spirit.

Athletic Director Bill Chaves says that “at Eastern Athletics we care about our student athletes. Working hard and taking full advantage of their opportunity to earn a degree. Representing the university and playing to their individual potential in Division I Athletics. If you can play, you can play.” Along with Chaves, head coaches Beau Baldwin and Jim Hayford participated in the video.

The EWU Pride Center partnered with MARCOM (Marketing and Communications) and EWU Athletics to produce the EWU If You Can Play Video.
