The significant problem of practice that was the focus of our group was the transference of knowledge from high school math courses to college level math courses. In particular we wanted to investigate why students seem to “forget” so much of what they learned in a pre-calculus course as they advanced from a high school environment to a college environment. We were curious as to if this was a result of misalignment of curriculum, different standards or some other reason. The problem of transfer of knowledge from course to course is consistently identified as one which hampers student success. The lack of transference can lead to frustration on the part of students and affect their ability to persevere and complete college level courses.
