Dear Campus Community:
On Friday, June 30, the legislature approved the 2017-19 operating budget for the state of Washington. This budget provides Eastern with compensation funding for each year of the biennium consistent with UFE, WFSE, and PSE collective bargaining agreements. The budget also includes a 2% salary increase for non-represented exempt staff, effective July 1. With the exception of compensation funding, Eastern will receive no additional funding.
Much of the state budget focuses on K-12 education to satisfy the state Supreme Court’s 2012 McCleary decision. There was also some investment in the State Need Grant and state student financial aid.
As I write this, legislators continue to negotiate a capital budget. I remain hopeful that Eastern will receive full funding for the Interdisciplinary Science Center.
This is an exciting time for Eastern. We are working creatively to meet students’ needs and expectations and to ensure a strong and thriving future for the university. However, as we plan for the coming years, our goals and strategies will need to reflect the constraints of our budgetary environment. As we learn more budget details, each vice president will work with his or her individual units and departments to map out plans for the biennium.
I appreciate the challenging work of our legislators and their continued support of Eastern while working in a bipartisan manner to solve difficult challenges related to K-12 education.
And, as always, I appreciate all your work to support the continuing success and inspiring mission of our university.
