Pass Through the Pillars is Eastern’s annual event to welcome students to their journey at Eastern. New students gather at 5th and College St., then pass through the Herculean Pillars. As they walk up the Hello Walk to Showalter Hall, they are greeted by and high-five faculty, staff and alumni who line the walkway.
Join us in this very special celebration as we make our new students feel welcomed to our family!
Date: Monday, Sept. 17
Location: In front of Showalter Hall (5th and College)

What you will do: It’s up to you! High-five the students, clap and cheer for them, say “Welcome!” and “Congratulations!” and “Go Eagles!” – Or any words of encouragement to them – most of all, HAVE FUN!
In 1915, at the spot we now know as 5th and College, students stood to celebrate a victory that arose from a huge challenge! Their beloved Showalter Hall – the original administration building and only building on campus – had burned to the ground in 1912. While Showalter was being rebuilt, the alumni raised money to build a memorial using the granite which had formed the first story of the former administration building.
For 102 years, the Gates of Knowledge or the Herculean Pillars have symbolized that the spirit of Eastern cannot be defeated. For decades after that, new students arriving at the train station, just down the hill from Showalter, would walk up the street, suitcases in hand, and enter campus through these very pillars to begin their Eastern journey. Today’s EWU students arrive in different ways, but they still pass through the same pillars in this incredible event.
