In the Spotlight is an opportunity for the campus community to get to know one another better. The goal is to build Eastern’s community by becoming familiar with the faces of faculty and staff members.
Name: Erick Keating
Title: Project Manager
Department: Academic Affairs, Provost Office
Number of years at Eastern: I started November 1, 1999. Instead of how long it has been I like to think about how wide it has been. As a project manager, I have had the good fortune to work with people in almost every department around campus, and many commercial and community partners as well. It has been a fantastic experience and mine truly is one of the best jobs on campus.
Brief personal/professional description: Project managers are a bit like whitewater rafting guides. We get to lead people on a thrilling adventure that they probably haven’t experienced before, or, if they have, it was on a different river. I’m blissfully married to my college sweetheart and we have no children.
Favorite book: Tends to be the one I’m currently reading which, at the moment, is Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis by Timothy Egan.
Favorite movie: Not technically a movie, but a pair of performances, starting on Tuesday night with the Dave Brubeck quartet at the Fox, followed on Wednesday by Winton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra at the INB. Incredible.
Favorite quote: “Your performance tomorrow is not determined by your performance today. Your performance tomorrow is determined by your learning today. The best performers are the best learners.” -Fred Shoemaker
Favorite restaurant: The Bandon Fish Market, Bandon Oregon
Favorite vacation: We like to pick a place we have never been and drop in to experience it. One of the best was a couple years ago in Detroit. We toured the city and the river, took in the Motown and Ford museums, caught a Tigers game and then capped it off with an Aretha Franklin concert at the Chene Park Amphitheatre which is now the Aretha Louise Franklin Amphitheatre.
If I could do anything today I would: Ease the space shuttle out of orbit and grease a landing at KSC.
