Employees Invited to Open Forum on EWU Immunization Policy

Eastern Washington University is preparing policy changes that would require employees to provide proof of immunization for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR). The proposed policy would expand the student MMR immunity requirement approved by the Board of Trustees in early 2019. EWU Health, Wellness and Prevention Services says a campus-wide, proof-of-immunity requirement for faculty and staff will help further protect the campus community from the spread of illness during an outbreak.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, representatives from the Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD) will be on campus for an open forum to discuss possible actions SRHD would take in the event of an outbreak. One possible outcome would involve placing the campus on “exclusionary” status. Under exclusionary status, employees and students without proven MMR immunity would not be allowed on campus. SRHD staff will also answer questions about the safety and effectiveness of the MMR vaccine.

Employees are encouraged to attend the forum. A Zoom meeting is also available for those who cannot attend in person.
