I am not good at it!” This exclamation from my high school daughter shocked me as she had always been good with math in the past—just like her mom. The change was not in my daughter’s ability—but in the curriculum. Her instructor expected her to solve problems—and show her work in a specific “new” way that made no sense to her. She could complete her work using “my way” (the same way that made sense to her mom) but that was not acceptable to her teacher. So, my question was, was she being evaluated on her knowledge or on her ability to demonstrate competence in a narrowly defined way?
