Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Section 504 prohibits discrimination against disabled persons, including both students and staff, by school districts receiving federal financial assistance. Included in the U.S. Department of Education regulations for Section 504 is the requirement that students with disabilities be provided with free, appropriate public education (FAPE).
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975
Mandated a free appropriate education for all children with disabilities, ensured due process rights, and mandated IEPs and LRE. As such, it is the core of Federal funding for special education. This law was passed in 1975 and went into effect in October of 1977 when the regulations were finalized.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990
The ADA recognizes and protects the civil rights of people with disabilities. The ADA covers a wide range of disability, and under titles II and III of the ADA, the Board develops and maintains accessibility guidelines for buildings, facilities, and transit vehicles and provides technical assistance and training on these guidelines.
