Eating healthy can be challenging at times. However, healthy eating can come from just a few easy diet changes and/or knowledge of what to eat. Here are 6 quick tips to help make healthy eating choices.
- Don’t skip breakfast.
Breakfast can be highly over looked. Eating a balanced breakfast gives your body nutrients that it needs for a great start to your day. Eating a balanced breakfast means eating a breakfast with foods from at least 3 of the 5 total food groups.
- Serving size and portions.
A simple way to healthier eating is controlling the portion size An important thing about smaller portions or portion control for all foods or meals is understanding the serving size of the foods that you are eating.
- Frequency of eating unhealthy foods
When eating unhealthy foods it is a good idea to eat smaller amounts less frequently. This will allow you for you to eat the items you love while also maintaining a healthy diet.
- Include all food groups in each meal.
There are 5 food groups that are important to include in each meal. The food groups are vegetables, fruit, grains, proteins, dairy (or dairy substitutes). Including most or all of these food groups in each meal helps to maintain a balanced diet.
- Find healthy “treat yourself “ foods that can substitute unhealthy ones.
Finding foods that you can indulge in and are nutritious at the same time can be hard. Trade milk chocolate for dark chocolate or fatty potato chips for low fat veggie chips, there can usually be a way to find treats to indulge in while also eating healthy. Finding yummy nutritious substitutes is a good way to have your cake and eat it too.
- Prep your meals ahead of time.
Sometimes it is hard to have well balanced meals due to the fact that it can take a long time to prep and cook them. If you see yourself having a busy week or day, try to prep and cook your meals in advance. This includes cutting vegetables or fruits early, cooking proteins and storing them in containers in the fridge, or even prepping whole meals and storing them.
