Well… I have recently gotten a chance to live a life of being single, but with a boyfriend. My boyfriend is currently deployed and with this now seperation, lonliness is inevitable. Although, I had a solution, I needed a pet!!! My roommate is great and we enjoy each others company, but she is always with her boyfriend and all my friends have different schedules than me. I knew getting a pet was perfect! I love all animals, but I needed a low mantienance, cuddely littel creature 🙂 A dog would demand too much time and the idea of having to go outside every few hours in the snow at night wasnt appealing, a bunny doesn’t do much but sit in a cage, and I already have fish and those are not really the cuddeling type, so I got myself a kitten.
My only reason for hessitation was due to the fact that she might make a mess in my apartment if I couldn’t get her litter box trained in a decent amount of time. Luckily when I got her was right at the end of school and I had a break before continuing in to Summer Quarter. So I got her home once I bought her and quickly got her set up and settled in. I made sure she had food, water, toys and rushed to get that litter box set up before she felt the urge to take care of business on my carpet. Now, the last time I had a small kitten was when I was around the age of five or six, meaning my parents potty trained the little thing. I was totally lost at where to even start. So I decided a good place to start was to take her and show her where the litter box was and give her a treat so she knew this was a good place to be. I did that periodically through out the day, well then we went on a trip to go meet my grandma (a complete cat lover), I was worried that she may loose all that I had taught her in where to find her litter box because we got home and she just about went on my carpet when I yelled and rushed her to the litter box in just enough time and gave her a treat. I then reacted and went in to over drive in trying to get her all trained. Now every about half hour I would walk her to her box and I would stay in there for a second. But again, she still didn’t get it (slow learner I guess).
I got so sick of walking her to her box, so then I started just picking her up when I had to go and would set her in her box while I had to go, and force her to stay there. Then I would give her a treat. After a few times of that when I had to go I would pick her up and take her in to her box and while I went she would too. YAY! I would give her a treat and she didn’t make a mess on my floor…. slight problem! Still about four months after this event EVERYTIME I have to go to the bathroom she sits in her litter box, whether she has to go or not. She has learned that that is her potty and she may use it whenever she feels the need, but without fail she now sits in it when I have to go.
