I have not liked Halloween for a long while. I grew up in a neighborhood where the houses were too far apart to participate much in trick or treating much. Every couple of years we would go to my grandma’s house to go trick or treating and one year (I was about 8 and my sister was 6) we went to a house that my mom knew. As we walked up my parents pushed us to walk up the steps and ring the doorbell. This particular house was home to a family with teenage kids. With that in mind we walked up the three steps and turned to ring the doorbell. As we did, the grim reaper “statue” behind us grabbed our shoulders and as my sister and I turned around, I punched the kid in the face. (Now I feel like this is the normal response to someone grabbing you). The kid was fine, he got a bloody nose but it stopped pretty quickly.
Now when I was older about 15, it was Halloween time again and my friends were getting excited about going to a haunted forest and just hanging out. I decided that I was going to go with them and have a fun Halloween. As we entered the forest it was kind of creepy of course and we saw a few younger kids get scared in front of us as we walked through. We got almost to the end and thought it was kind of lame that there weren’t many people out scaring us so we go to take what my friend said was the last turn and I heard a rustle behind me. As I turned to see what it was, I see a dark cloaked figure and as he starts to make a noise I punch him in the jaw and he falls to the ground. My friends who had no idea what just happened turned to see me swing the punch and him fall. End of story they had to call 911 and the guy had a good black eye. Moral of the story I will never again participate in Halloween activities unless 4-year-olds are present, and never jump at me from behind.
Unconditioned Stimulus: participating in Halloween, specifically trick or treating and haunted forests
Unconditioned response: punch face when things jump out or grab shoulders from behind
Conditioned Stimulus: being aware of people behind me at night or during Halloween time
Conditioned Response: no participating in anything Halloween related where things/people might jump out at me
funny video clip, sorry about the racial stereotype
