The ideas that have impacted me the most in the history and system of the science of learning was Rene Decates theory of Cartesian Dualism. In Cartesian Dualism there are two classes of human behavior is involuntary behavior (aka the reflexes) and voluntary behavior. Voluntary behavior is behavior that is not triggered by external stimuli but occurs because of a persons conscious intent or freewill. Many people since Decates time have abolished the idea of Dualism. Even the famous psychologist B.F Skinner argued that freewill does not exist.
I have wrestled with these philosophies for quite some time. I have come to the conclusion that I agree with both Decates and Skinners ideas. I think that 99% of my action are caused primarily because of my biology and experience. They lack freewill in every since because I am primary controlled by the environments social norms and my upbringing. But I do no agree that my life is purely coincidence inheritance and situations that make me who I am. I think there is a tiny factor of involuntary behavior in all living things. I believe that tiny influence is a soul, a unique and powerful energy that coincides with in us all. Separate but working together to shape our lives like the theory of Cartesian Dualism. History can tell us how things use to be and philosophers and psychologist can hypothesis and theorists about our present and future, but it is up to the reader to think about and determine for themselves what to believe in. Decates or Skinner who is right? Although this might be a contradiction I can say with certainty that I believe that both are right.
