The film13 Daysis full of examples of discriminative stimuli. One part I found particularly interesting was JFK’s rant about what could happen if event continued on the path that they were on. “What if one ship resists the inspection? We shoot out it’s rutter, and board. They shoot down one of our planes in response, so we bomb their antiaircraft sights. Response to that, they attack Berlin, so we invade Cuba, and they fire their missiles and we fire ours.” This speech shows the thought process that JFK goes through when faced with the Russian missiles in Cuba. After this the quarantine goes into effect. When the Soviet ships show up and see the US ships 20 of them turn and head back home. This is a great example of discriminative stimulus. The sight of the American ships caused the Soviet ships to turn around therefore positively reinforcing them with their lives and the lives of their countrymen.
The next big Sd is the US leaking the Intel about taking their bombs out of Turkey is the Soviets take theirs out of Cuba. This one action set off a chain reaction that eventually led to the removal of Russian missiles from Cuba. In that chain reaction there are many different Sd’s. Maybe you should watch it and see some of them for yourself. Oh and don’t be distracted by the accents! They can get on your nerves. 😉
