“Use your tears. Use your pain. Use your fear.”
–from The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, page 144
The successes of Arnold Spirit in Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian come about because of kindness. But he’s motivated to succeed by the cruelty of others. What is cruelty and why is it so prevalent today, especially in politics? Who wins when things get cruel? Who loses? And what strategies can we use to defend against cruelty as well as avoid being cruel ourselves?
