Earth Day was founded in 1970 by a former governor and senator of Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson. Gaylord felt that there were many environmental issues overlooked by politicians that he felt should be addressed. This Saturday will be the 32nd celebration of Earth day, and Cheney’s third annual celebration. I implore each and every one of you Easternites to participate in the cleansing and caretaking of our wonderful Mother Earth. As I walk through campus and surrounding areas, I can’t help but notice that filth and litter plague our streets. Beer bottles, cigarette butts, wrappers, and soda pop containers are strewn about, making our city seem unattractive and uncared for. Well I care, I care about Cocolala and College Street, I care about Showalter lawn, and I think you should care too. This Saturday you can make a difference by showing up to Cheney’s Earth Day Celebration and taking part in tree planting, litter pick-up, and fun for everyone. If that doesn’t sound like enough, there will also be tasty snacks and beverages made available to those who help out.
Earth Day isn’t the only day we should be environmentally aware, we should acknowledge the state of our environment every day and try to improve it. You can start fighting for your Mother on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon on the EWU campus. Remember, our environment is the product of our actions.
