The Eagle volleyball team held on to their undefeated record and improved their ranking after defeating Montana and Montana State last weekend. Eastern is now 18th in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll, jumping over WSU and Utah.
EWU swept Montana last Friday 3-0 in their first conference match of the season. The first game was tied 28-28 when a block by Lindsay Page and Monica Lynch gave the Eagles the sideout. A kill by Senior Janelle Ruen gave Eastern the win on the next point.
Eastern jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second game and just kept going. The closest Montana came the rest of the game was eight points and the Eags sealed their fate with a 30-21 win.
In the third game, EWU never took more than a three-point lead with five ties throughout the game. A service ace by Megan Kitterman put the Eags up 23-22 and Eastern rallied for the win 30-26.
Ruen, who has reached the 1,000 career digs mark, had 18 digs and six kills on the night, while Page had 11 kills and five blocks. Lynch added five kills and Freshman Andrea Verdoljak had 15 digs.
Eastern kept the winning streak going against Montana State on Saturday night, even though the Bobcats took EWU to five games, doubling Eastern’s loss record for the season. The Eags came out on top though, beating MSU 3-2.
Ruen had 24 kills and 13 digs, making this her sixth double-double of the season. Page pitched in 19 kills and Sophomore Keva Sonderen had 13.
Eastern is now 2-0 in the Big Sky Conference as they continue their road trip, playing Portland State and Oregon State Oct. 4 – 5. The Eagles return home to take on Weber State on Oct. 10.
