John Cusack rarely disappoints with his performances on screen. In fact, I’d say that he is one of the best actors around. So I had high hopes when I saw that he was going to perform in a “scary” movie, which isn’t really his forte. I rushed to the theater and grabbed my seat, ready to be engulfed by a horrific movie that I would not soon forget. Now I’m surprised that I remember the title. Even after this movies somewhat slow and uneventful beginning, I still anticipated that the sluggishly rising action would lead to a climax and resolution well worth the wait. About an hour into the movie my hopes hit the floor, hard.
This movie is about a group of people that all end up at some creepy, abandoned hotel in the middle of a storm and can’t get out because floods are blocking their escape. It’s dark and rainy, so people start getting killed…. Naturally. But, who dunnit? Was it the cop, the convict, the limo driver, or the prostitute?
Well, I’m not going to tell you, but looking at the cast it’s easy to tell which people are going to die off and which ones aren’t. The supporting actors in this psycho thriller are Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet, Jake Busey, and some other recognizable faces. This film just reinforces the fact that actor’s performances can’t save a poorly written, confused plot line. That’s right, I said confused plot line. It seems that the writers couldn’t decide what type of movie they wanted to make, a typical horror movie or a smart thriller. There are aspects of both, but they mixed about as well as beer and wine.
Hold on though, there’s a surprise ending that just might get you. But, probably not because you see it coming from a mile away. Let’s just say this movie might be one that you can wait to see on video, that way you won’t offend anybody when you scream obscenities because you’re so disappointed with the entire thing. The fifty something couple in front of me were pissed, let me tell you.
