It would appear that there is a great multitude of monstermovies that have come out the last couple of years. Some have beenvery, very bad. Shaun of the Dead is not one of them.
Shaun (Simon Pegg) is a guy with a couple of problems. His jobin retail is the kind that a lot of teenagers work in, so basicallyit’s not a very good job. His best friend Ed (Nick Frost)isn’t helping by encouraging him to believe that his lifeneeds no improvement.
His girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) doesn’t agree, andultimately dumps him because he doesn’t aspire to do muchwith his life.
Her best friends, Dianne and David (Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran)don’t help by encouraging her that her life is all the betterfor dumping him.
And Shaun’s mom Barbara (Penelope Wilton) is married to ajerk who hates him (Bill Nighy).
Shaun wants to fix these problems; he really does. Buthe’s a bit preoccupied suddenly, when all of London isattacked by hordes of zombies and for Shaun it becomes survivalfirst, social problems later.
Now, when I went to go see this movie I didn’t expect alot, to tell you the truth, but I was proven wrong. Shaun of theDead is one of the best movies I’ve seen this year, butit’s definitely not for the faint of heart.
Let me explain—it’s a British film. That means thateven though it’s advertised as a comedy, you have to rememberthat the British have a much drier sense of humor than Americans, which means that you are laughing less and wincing more ifyou’re an American. Don’t get me wrong; this is a greatmovie, but as a monster flick. It’s scary, it’s goryand it’s got lots of jump-out-of-your-seat shockers. Butit’s got some good laughs too.
Pegg actually wrote this movie. It’s interesting to notethat he first started out as a stand-up comedian, became reallypopular in Britain, and then got noticed in the states when he wascast in Tom Hanks’ Band of Brothers. I totally recommendseeing this movie.
It probably wouldn’t be a good idea if you’re goingon a first date, but if you’re just kicking it with a coupleof friends and you want something that will scare you and make youlaugh (sometimes), go with this one.
