Dr. Robert Olafson, an English Professor here at EWU, has written a sequel to his book, The T.R. Connection.
Author House publishing company published his latest book, The Big Island Posse in Nov. 2004. Dr. Olafson has been working on the story for the past few years.
Help from EWU allowed Olafson to write his book.
“I had a research grant in the summer of 1994, so that gave me a chance to start writing the book,” Olafson said.
Books In Motion published his first book, but because they only publish books on tape, Olafson decided to go with another publisher, Author House, and get the book in print.
The Big Island Posse is Western historical fiction. The book takes readers from the Badlands of the Dakotas, to Seattle and all the way to the Hawaiian Islands. The story includes old-fashioned gun play, wild horse stunts, luaus, captures, escapes and courtships. It also includes a surprise ending that is promised to be shocking.
Olafson said the book is great for high school aged readers all the way up to adults.
Olafson’s experience growing up in North Dakota and teaching in Honolulu helped him bring the story to life.
“I had taken several trips to Hawaii over the years, and I had previously written a book about the Dakota Badlands with Theodore Roosevelt and his work crews and cowboys because I was born back there in North Dakota,” Olafson said.
Olafson has written an abundance of material, including writings about many people like Theodore Roosevelt, Walt Whitman, Owen Wister and Frank Norris. He also wrote a play entitled “Walt,” which won the Spokane Civic Theater’s first Playwrights’ Forum contest.
The Big Island Posse is currently available to purchase online through Amazon.com, Random House.com and AuthorHouse.com. Dr. Olafson says he will work to get his book sold in the University bookstore when more copies become available.
