“If it’s in the game, it’s in the game.” That’s the slogan that EA Sports uses with all of their products. Without a doubt, EA Sport’s most well-known game is Madden, but NCAA Football is slowly catching up, especially with all the extra’s being added to NCAA Football every year. Just two years ago in the 2003 version you could only play as Division I-A teams, such as Washington State, Florida St. Nebraska, etc, but in NCAA Football 2004 EA added EWU, the Big Sky Conference and some other Division I-AA teams and then added more for their 2005 version. What else can they do for next year’s version?
EA takes a lot of pride in perfecting the true look of the school’s stadiums and uniforms, at least for the Division 1 schools. They didn’t do a horrible job with the likes of EWU, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Sure, Woodward Stadium is pretty well done, they just need to switch the scoreboard to the other side of the field, but they could still add some things in the background.
At Washington State’s Martin Stadium you can see the campus in the background, so why not do that for Woodward? Maybe add in Pearce and Dressler Halls behind the east bleachers or the PHASE behind the south end zone. That would just make the look of Woodward Stadium more perfected.
It’s not just EWU that could use some work, but all of the Division I-AA schools in the game. It’s almost like EA doesn’t give enough respect to I-AA schools. Sure they added them, but they need to take as much pride in them as they do for all the other schools. Probably the biggest thing missed by EA with the Big Sky Conference was not having the Governor’s Cup game between EWU and Montana be promoted as a rivalry; it was just a normal Big Sky game. They again have every big name rivalry and trophy for other schools. Where’s the cup for our rivalry?
They seem not to take as much pride in EWU’s players as well. The Washington State team for the 2005 version looked perfect. Everything was correct for WSU, while half of EWU either had the wrong numbers, wrong positions or even the wrong racial background. If anyone tries to play with EWU, the punter is starting at the middle linebacker spot, a defensive lineman is kicking off, and Gregory Smith is African-American. All of it is wrong. Sure, EA can’t make EWU better than everyone else, but again, they could take more pride with the I-AA schools.
They have done such a great job of the player being able to get lost in the game, especially when it comes to their “Dynasty Mode” where you play a season, recruit and repeat. Something that would be really great if it was added for next year’s version would be to play a Division I-AA season, with it’s own rankings and even the playoff system. That would be a big hit around smaller school campuses like our own if that were added. It would be interesting to see what additions and changes will be made to Eastern in the August release
