This spring the staff of The Easterner was recognized in the 2005 Greater Northwest Student Journalism Awards competition. Thirteen awards were given in 10 categories to both individual staff members and the paper as a whole.
“The GNSJA competition reviewed 750 submissions from 52 schools in three states. The competition in almost every category was heated” according to the GNSJA press release.

Staff writer Troy Kirby received an honorable mention in the general news category. Kirby is a Journalism major and has worked for The Easterner for nearly two years.
Eagle Chow editor and graphic designer Steven Wilber won in several areas: third place in editorial cartoons, in addition to second place and honorable mention for the cartoons section. Wilber is a Film major and has worked at The Easterner for almost three years.
Managing editor Brandon Hansen won in two categories, honorable mention for sports news and second place in sports features. Hansen is a Journalism major and has been at The Easterner for nearly two years.
Photo editor Dustin Snipes received four awards in two categories. In the feature photo section Snipes placed second and third. For sports photo he won first place and received an honorable mention. Snipes is a Theater major and has been with The Easterner for three years.
