Dear Opinion Editor,
This letter is in reference to Van Carter’s article “Racism is a cultural trait,” which appeared in the Oct. 12-18 issue of The Easterner.
racâ?¢ism n : a belief that some races are by nature superior to others; also : discrimination based on such belief.
First I believe Mr. Carter needs a refresher on how racism and racists are defined. As a photographer/writer for the Easterner last year I saw the change that occurred at the newspaper last spring and the different mind sets that came out while we endured the Ward Churchill and Young Republican Bake Sale affairs.
Then as now, some people including Van just don’t get it. Bill Bennet may be a racist, a bigot, or a host of other things, but in my opinion he’s just another fool that, as my father used to say, put his mouth in motion before he put his brain in gear.
I am not, nor ever have been a racist, and I am appalled that Van attempts to purport that ‘we are all racists’. Speak for yourself, Van, your article shows that you are the racist. I’ll bet my next paycheck on the fact that you haven’t witnessed true racist behavior, other than your own, nor have been in the south when the real racial problems were still going on.
I spent two and a half years in the mid 1970s in Georgia, got a taste of what the old system was, yet even then it had improved. I spent a year in Korea where I, and many whites lived under fear from the ‘Brotherhood’, a situation that was in direct opposition to what the south saw 50 to 200 years ago. Yet to this day I don’t hold that against anyone, I don’t label anybody a certain way other than, as Red Foreman says on That ’70’s Show, a dumb-ass, and that classification doesn’t include anyone due to race, color or ethnic background.
You owe every reader of the Easterner an apology for your remarks and for the label you try to tag the good people of this world with. What is it all about Van? Does it make you feel good, or as a savior for the downtrodden by attempting to classify people as racists? Do you think that by attempting to classify people as racists that you’ll make up somehow for the stupidity the reigned common many years ago? As the Diversity Editor I feel it’s your duty to see that this kind of garbage doesn’t make the print instead of authoring it.
