British Jew marries Israeli dolphin. This may sound like a headline for a tabloid newspaper or an episode of the Jerry Springer Show, but no, this time the story was straight from CNN.
On Jan. 3, Sharon Tendler became the first woman to ever marry a dolphin. Although the marriage had no legal bearings, Tendler said that the wedding reflected her everlasting love for the 35-year-old bottle-nosed dolphin named Cindy. One must only wonder what they will do on their honeymoon.
The highlight of the ceremony consisted of Tendler in her white silk dress and pink tiara, leaning over the side of the enclosure and kissing Cindy as she whispered, “I love you,” into his blow hole. “I’m the happiest girl on earth,” said Tendler. “I made a dream come true, and I am not a pervert.”
Who constitutes what a pervert is? Zoosexuality is the emotional or sexual attraction to animals. Yes, they actually have a word for it. In fact, studies have found that more than one to two percent of sexually active adults have had a significant sexual experience with an animal. This number is two to four times larger among rural teenagers. This is just about as close to perverted as you can get.
Despite this, many state laws don’t deal with perverts. Only about half of U.S. states have laws against sex with animals. Since the turn of the century, Oregon, Maine, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana have adopted new legislations.
On the other hand, similar legislation in Texas has been repeatedly struck down by the courts on the basis that moral objection alone does not supply enough sufficient information to ban a private act.
A child at the wedding between Tendler and the dolphin was heard asking his father about what kind of children the newlyweds would have. Although the thought may be shocking, it can only be looked at with humor. Humans and animals cannot impregnate each other. Sex with an animal can, however, lead to infection, injury and even death.
In fact, on July 2, 2005, a man in Enumclaw, Wash. died from acute peritonitis. His colon was pierced while he was having sex with a horse.
Things like this make a person proud to be from Washington state. No charges were filed against the other men involved because bestiality is legal and investigators found that no harm had been done to the animal.
State Senator Pam Roach said she plans to draft legislation making bestiality illegal. Good, maybe we can get something taken care of. Until then, the rest of us will be left just thinking, “WTF?”
