I’m happy to see that the Easterner is actually covering this. This bill passed about midway through January and should be of concern to many if not all students at Eastern. On February 7th I was asked to testify at The U.S. Secretary of Education’s Commission on the Future of Higher Education, which was held in Seattle. My testimony consisted of statistics regarding student debt and the effect that working while going to school has on students’ educational process. In conjunction with the Washington Student Lobby and as a student and representative of Eastern Washington University I reminded the members of the commission that the best form of financial aid is low tuition.
However, I also emphasized the importance of federal aid and the benefits that it provides to our local, state, and National economies. The high cost of education serves as a barrier for many students at Eastern Washington University and around the U.S. I will hopefully be making a trip to Washington D.C. some time during spring quarter and a large part of my focus will be student debt and federal aid.
