After three years working at Eastern, Dean of Students Al Thompson will not return next year. Thompson has chosen instead to become the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where he will oversee nearly 160 full-time employees in 10 operational areas.
His time spent at Eastern was focused on communication with students, which resulted in the creation of “Dialogue with the Dean.” The session focused on meeting with a group of students who then had the opportunity to discuss various ideas about campus life.
“It has given me the opportunity to better understand the campus culture as well as to begin initiating efforts to address some of the key issues facing students,” Thompson said in an email.
The Dean of Students position works with students on a daily basis and leads the Student Life office in the PUB.
Organizations reporting to the dean include Campus Recreation, Student Activities, Residential Life and Career Services.
Thompson has also served as the primary administrative liaison for the Associated Students of EWU.
“As the Dean of Students, it is my concern and belief to advocate for students and to assist with the movement toward improving campus life for the student body,” Thompson said.
Thompson came to Eastern from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he held the position of assistant to the chancellor for affirmative action and diversity. His background in education extends more than 20 years.
“To serve as the Dean of Students at EWU has been my pleasure and honor,” said Thompson. “I will always treasure my time at EWU as a part of this very special place with such a caring community of faculty, staff and students.”
