My sister tilted her head toward a guy in flannel who sat across the aisle from her. We were flying back from Alaska and there was snow in the mountains around and below us, so she felt cold. It was eighty in the plane and she had three of those skimpy airline blankets, but if she sees snow she feels cold.
I hate the hospital- the cranky secretaries handing out clipboards, the clips straining to contain a girthy stack of paperwork, some janitor down the hall whistling. Do you have insurance? Does my insurance cover it? Currently I’m covered by my father’s plan.
Come, freshman, and sit by my fire. Turn up that log, man, and sit. Have a stick-roast yourself some marshmallows. Enjoy it; breathe it all in. Relax. It’s nice, isn’t it? College life, I mean. The big “C” that isn’t cancer. No patronizing dads, no disappointed moms, only a few professors with attendance sheets and no trips to the principal for chewing gum in class.
