Upon entering the office of Dr. Lynn Briggs, the new dean of the College of Arts and Letters, there was an instant and inexorable sense of welcome and hominess. It could be the Dachshund sign on her door (she is the boarder of a wiener dog and two rabbits), the fluffy overstuffed furniture, the picture of her son perched atop columns of filing cabinets, or it could be Briggs’s own smiling face and open composure.

Memorial Day is a time to pay homage to those who have served our country.
