Students who graduate from our Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program are eligible for P-3 teacher licensure in the State of Washington and will gain valuable expertise working with children ages 3-8 and their families. The ECE Program will prepare candidates to work in Head Start, ECEAP (Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program) and public or private preschools. This program develops the skills and knowledge base of future early childhood educators through an applied, field-based format. Our program foundation is based on principles of developmentally appropriate practice and universal design for learning. Coursework is aligned with Washington State Core Competencies for Early Care and Education Professionals, the ECE Endorsement Competencies for the State of Washington Educator Standards Board, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children Standards for Early Childhood Preparation Programs.
Why Early Childhood Education?
Pre-K to Third Grade Curriculum Alignment
Coursework prepares preservice teachers for specific curriculum and assessment practices utilized in Washington State preschool through third grade public school classrooms. Content reflects full day kindergarten guidelines. Early numeracy and literacy pathways, family engagement and early learning STEM guidelines put forth by Washington State.
Washington's state funded, comprehensive preschool Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) is expanding to allow enrollment for all qualifying 4 year olds in Washington. Many of these new programs will be housed in school districts. The expansion creates a significant need for new preschool teachers with a minimum of an Early Childhood degree.
Full Day Kindergarten
School districts are now required to provide full day kindergarten for all entering kindergarten in Washington State. This expansion will create another significant need for new kindergarten teachers possessing an Early Childhood Endorsement with the teacher certification. Coursework in the ECE major provides a pathway for the endorsement training for the Washington Kindergarten Assessment (WAKIDS) and is aligned with the Washington Guide to Full Day Kindergarten.
Decreased Class Size
Washington has mandated class size reduction for kindergarten through third grade classrooms and will only have 17 students per 1 classroom teacher. This, in combination with full day kindergarten, creates a need for over 5,000 new classrooms across the state in K-3 and a significant need for qualified teachers with and Early Childhood Endorsement.
