EWU Foundation Endowment Hits Record High

Despite turbulent times for many university investment returns nationwide, EWUF Endowment Prospers CHENEY, Washington – The latest national study of college endowments reveals the Eastern Washington University Foundation Endowment continues to perform well despite challenging financial markets that have impacted other universities. The strong performance is reflected by the fact the EWU Foundation Endowment is now at a record high, totaling more than $20.2 million. Eastern was one of 805 higher education institutions surveyed for the 2016 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments (NCSE). Giving Joy Day Success

Eagle Nation, Thanks to the generosity of many, EWU exceeded its goal of $100,000 in scholarship support during Giving Joy Day on Nov. 29. Alumni, friends, faculty and staff joined together to make this inaugural event a smashing success. Total Giving Joy Day philanthropic support included:   GIVING JOY DAY IMPACT: $324,925 Scholarship cash gifts: $274,770 Additional cash gifts: $4,330 Additional pledges: $45,825 It was all hands on deck for the Advancement team leading up to and during the campaign. We are grateful for the partnership and creativity of the university community in support of this effort. NESTT Center at EWU

The LIVING BUILDING Challenge The Natural and Environmental Science Testing and Teaching Center (NESTT) will be the first of its kind at a public university. By meeting the Living Building Challenge (LBC), NESTT Center will be a showcase for sustainable practices, going beyond the highest Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard. NESTT Center will provide the public with a model of how careful and planned construction can add to the value of the community and be a positive impact on the natural environment. EWU Foundation Endowment Outperforms National Average

A new national study reveals the Eastern Washington University Foundation Endowment continues to perform above national averages. The data was collected from 812 U.S. colleges and universities for the 2015 NACUBO-Commonfund Study of Endowments (NCSE). According to the survey, here is how the Foundation’s investment portfolio fared compared to the national average:   National Avg. About the Collectors When EWU professor Walter Powers and his wife Myrtle, a school teacher, saw Norman Rockwell’s, The Spelling Bee in a Seattle gallery around 1970, it reminded them of their own grade school experience and spurred them to build, in just one decade, one of the largest collections of Norman Rockwell original signed lithograph collections in the world. Now retired, and generous supporters of EWU student scholarships, Walt and Myrtle Powers have donated a significant set of lithographs from their collection to EWU Foundation. Lucy Covington Center at EWU

The Lucy Covington Legacy Lucy Covington, a long-time tribal rights activist and Colville Tribal Council member, helped change the course of American Indian history through her courageous and selfless style of leadership in the face of great odds. Covington was one of many tribal peoples who worked in the 1950s and 1960s to bring an end to “termination” – an ill-conceived federal policy designed to wrest control of land and natural resources from tribal ownership, by terminating tribal status. Lucy worked with members of her own and other tribes to help preserve tribal sovereignty and self-determination for not only the Colville but for tribe across the country. Covington’s actions and success contributed toward reversing the United States government’s effort to extinguish its responsibilities to American Indian tribes.
