If an F-1 student is having specific academic difficulties, a temporary illness or medical condition, or needs fewer courses than a full course load in his/her last term to complete the program of study, an immigration advisor in the Office of Global Initiatives may authorize a reduced course load (RCL).
Full time is:
- 18 contact hours for ELI students;
- 12 credits for Bachelors and Post Baccalaureate students; and
- 10 credits for Master’s degree students,
each quarter or semester, including summer. No more than 3 web/hybrid credits can count towards a full time load. Request approval before dropping below full-time, including Summer session.
If you will be enrolled for a less than full-time course load at any time during a quarter, you must have prior approval from the an immigration advisor in the Office of Global Initiatives. F-1 and J-1 international students are required to maintain full-time enrollment to maintain immigration status.
A student who drops below a full course of study without the prior approval of an immigration advisor will be considered out of status.
Regulations governing reduced course load authorizations for F-1 students can be found at 8 CFR 214.2(f)(6)(iii); for J-1 student the regulations governing a reduced course load can be found at 22 CFR 62.23(e).
