Eastern Washington University is mandated by RCW 40.14 to identify, manage, and preserve its records. As University employees, we each play a role in ensuring the University meets these requirements. If records are not properly managed the University, and in some cases individual employees, may be subject to fines and penalties for failure to comply.
In order to help employees understand their roles and obligations for records retention, the Human Resources Office has designated Records Management staff who are available to serve as a resource to guide individuals through the Records and Information Management process.
Use of effective records management strategies will reduce stress for workers by making records more accessible. It will also save time and money by: eliminating the burden of unnecessarily maintaining and storing documents that are not subject to retention; by reducing the amount of time spent locating unorganized records; and by eliminating fines and penalties resulting from failures to meet legal requirements related to records retention.
