I did my unit plan on the Revolutionary War because I love to teach fifth grade. A lot of United States history is included in the curriculum for this grade, so I thought that the Revolutionary War would be a great subject for me to become better acquainted with. In spending the last week encompassed in the Revolutionary War and this unit plan, I have developed some opinions about this project.
Overall, I feel as a future educator that this was a great project for us to undertake. Not only did I become more familiar with a popular piece of fifth grade history curriculum, but I also got a good refresher on writing lesson plans and putting together a unit. However, I did feel that the extent of everything we needed for this project was a little too much for such a short class. I am satisfied with the outcome of my unit plan, but I know that if I would have had more time, I could have done so much more. I had some great ideas for more lesson plans. However, the seven that I did were too time consuming for me to spend time on more and still have time for everything else. A suggestion for the shorter classes that I have for making the ‘busy work’ section of this project less demanding is to cut out the Table of Contents, Overview and Documents sections. These parts of the unit plan were helpful, but could have easily been left out.I really appreciated all the time and materials that you devoted to this class. I speak of not having enough time for such an inclusive project, but I really felt the whole time that you were willing to help us in any way. I would have to say that this is one of the things that impressed me most about this class. You were a great example of a teacher who is involved. As a whole class, we are very thankful.
Everything in the project syllabus was useful which I valued. If I were doing a unit plan on my own, I probably would not make notes of all my references, and then later regret it. With this project, I did write down those references and I am already thankful that I did. I am really excited about the fact that when I do ever need a lesson plan for the Revolutionary War, they are ready and waiting. The best reflection that I can give this project is to say that I enjoyed learning about the Revolutionary War and only wish that we had time to do a more thorough job.
