With the Iron Brigade of the West
The central point of this unit is that life goes on, even in uncertain and chaotic times. Few aspects of human activity are as multifaceted as the wartime experiences. Considering that American children are exposed to a very frightening world, it will be good for them to know that the country has been confronted with awesome wars in the past and yet the nation survives. To better understand our own times, it is good for children to know what earlier generations of Americans have lived through. This will allow them to see our own times in perspective. The Civil War is a huge subject. In order to narrow the focus, this unit looks at a single brigade, the Iron Brigade of the Army of the Potomac. The students can get an extremely broad and deep understanding of the Civil War by following this Iron Brigade from the earliest days of the war to the turning point at the Battle of Gettysburg.
